Helping Children Hear God’s Voice: A Guide for Parents

Helping Children Hear God’s Voice: A Guide for Parents

Understanding How God Speaks to Children

God desires a relationship with us from an early age, and He speaks to children in ways they can understand. The Bible shows us that God communicates through:

  • Scripture: His written Word guides and instructs.
  • An Inner Voice: A gentle nudge or thought that aligns with His truth.
  • Others: Wise mentors, parents, and even friends can be vessels of His messages, even angels.
  • Creation: The beauty of nature can reveal God’s power and presence.

In Lila and the Voice, Lila learns to recognize the gentle whisper of God speaking to her heart. She discovers that God is always communicating with her, it’s just a matter of listening and obeying.

Creating an Atmosphere for Hearing God’s Voice

For children to hear God, they must learn how to be still, open and attentive. As parents, we can help by:

  • Encouraging quiet moments of reflection. In  a world full of distractions, setting aside time for silence allows children to tune in to God’s presence.
  • Teaching kids to ask God for confirmation, “what are You saying to me?” Prompt them to pray and expect God to respond in different ways.
  • Providing a faith-filled environment for all. Reading faith-based books like the God Speaks series with Lila helps kids understand that God wants to communicate with them personally.

Practical Ways to Help Kids Recognize God’s Voice

Here are a few ways to nurture this practice in your home:

Read Bible stories together - Discuss how God spoke to people in scripture and how He still speaks today.

Encourage journaling or drawing (a favourite)- Ask children to write or illustrate what they feel God is saying to them. This makes spiritual reflection more tangible.

Lead by example-Share your own experiences of hearing God’s voice. Your testimony will inspire them to seek Him more.

Encouragement for Parents/Care-Givers

It is very natural to wonder if your child is truly hearing from God. For we know we often wonder as adults from time to time. But we must grow to learn to Trust that He is speaking in ways that are best suited for us and them. Be patient and create opportunities for their faith to grow organically.

I believe God longs to connect through all His children, and through books like Lila and the Voice, we can help them understand that He is always near, always speaking, and always guiding. Reminding us as well
